Abstract
A blast furnace charging apparatus of the radically innovative design has been developed. The salient feature of the apparatus is a rotary burden distributor, which provides for a uniform laying of burden material in many layers in circumference in the top and a possibility of flexible control of coke/ore ratio along the furnace radius. Trials had been carried out in physical 1:20 and 1:5 scale models, using mathematical experiments design. The results proved that the rotary charge distributor had a substantial edge over other traditional devices of burden distribution. Industrial trials were carried out in 2000 m³ and 3000 m³ blast furnaces at the West Siberia Steel Works in Russia. As was seen, after putting the apparatus into service the coke rate had been reduced by 4–7%, while the furnace productivity increased by 5–8%. The saving of coke was achieved thanks to a better use of the gas reducing ability, and productivity enhanced due to a better distribution of gas flows along the furnace radius.
