Abstract
A new family of high alumina refractories, characterised by a β‘ Sialon bond formed in-situ, has been developed. β‘ Sialon combines a very good resistance to corrosion, a very low wettability by molten steel and a high hot mechanical strength. These materials are therefore especially suitable for use in steel plants. The aim of this paper is to highlight some characteristics that have already been demonstrated at an industrial scale in steel plants. These new materials have been successfully applied in sliding gate valves. They simultaneously increase the plates lifetime because of the very good resistance of Sialon and improve the steel cleanliness and the working conditions because they are not pitch impregnated. Their use in manufacturing the blowing part of gas purging systems has also considerably decreased the wear and the risks of blowing failure. These new systems have therefore a greatly improved reliability. The development is underway for creating a complete range of Sialon products for steel casting.
