Abstract

After many years of maintenance-free operation worldwide, a case of leaks at conventional copper staves was found and investigated. The reasons for the occurrence of leaks were analysed, and a quick method for repair was developed in a joint effort between the BF operator and the supplier. The results of the investigations led to a more detailed understanding of the stave behaviour and consequences on the cooling system. Already long before these first leaks were found in conventional copper staves new advanced cooling elements have been developed. After intensive testing in a test oven, a set of stavelets, a copper block stave and a steel stave have been installed in a blast furnace. After more than 24 months of testing in operation, the different new elements have proven their reliability and their solidness. With each of these advanced cooling elements as well as for the conventional copper staves the cooling systems of the blast furnaces can be further optimised in the future.
