Abstract

Stretcher and tension leveller units using conventional tension rollers are compared with the innovative Umlauf mechanical linear drive, known as Umlauf Bridles. Umlauf Bridles provide significant advantages in product quality, particularly in achieving better flatness and lower residual stress, due to linear strip guidance and the ability to apply higher and more uniform tensile forces. These benefits lead to improved tool life in downstream processes such as shearing, punching, and deep drawing. Additionally, the system allows for more consistent strip properties and enables lower and more controlled stretching rates, offering more forming potential for deep-drawing operations. Experimental results validate the superior performance of Umlauf Bridles in both new and retrofitted installations.
