Abstract

Since the invention of the oil film rol1 neck bearing, many design changes have evolved to accommodate the deinands of the mctals industries. In the past, most of these changes were production oriented. Today's demands, however, are diferente froin those of the 70's. With the application of new technology, tolerances which were once considered unattainable are now produced routinely. Quality and yield, always of concem in the past, have become increasingly significant as performance criteria. The new control systems to satisfy these increasingly stringent criteria require new bearing designs to realize their full potential. Several new oil film bearing developtments have evolved and are now combined in a package which offers significant advantages to operators considering new equipment purchases. Conversion designs are also available which permit many of the benefits of this new bearing technology to be applied to existing mills
