OPERATING RESULTS OF DC FURNACE UPGRADES AT SMI STEEL INC., BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA

Abstract

SMI Steel Inc. commissioned its NKK 75-ton DC furnace in April 1994. The furnace as installed was powered by (2) 33 MVA Fuji transformers having a total electrical output of 45 MW, and a More' supersonic door lance injecting oxygen at a rate of 2200 SCFM. The furnace was capable of consistently producing approximately 550,000 billet tons per year. To meet increased demand for both finished and semi-finished goods production, the furnace was upgraded in May of 2000 with the aim of producing 600,000+ tons per year. The furnace was upgraded in two major areas. First, the furnace transformers and rectifiers were upgraded to allow 10% more current at maximum capacity. Second, two More’ Modules were installed to increase the chemical energy input into the furnace. Additionally, a More’ Catfis automatic temperature sampler was installed to increase the safety and timeliness of temperature and carbon sampling.
