Operational experience with new type cooling elements in the blast furnace

Abstract

The last and the current campaign of ROGESA No.4 blast furnace have both been characterized by the application of newly developed cooling elements. In the previous campaign lasting from the year 1995 to 2005 two copper test staves have been installed in the area of high heat load in the furnace. After these eight years of furnace operation the test staves have been investigated regarding their condition and structure in order to understand more of their performance. A condition allowing a much longer lifetime has been found without significant modifications of these cooling elements. In the following campaign starting in the year 2003 another test period was started with the installation of steel staves amidst the lower rows of cast iron staves. Resulting from the significantly reduced thickness of the steel staves a much lower temperature level of the cooling elements is achieved, proven by the first operational results. Based on the high mechanical strength of the material an improved lifetime of the cooling also in this area of the blast furnace can be expected.
