Abstract

Secondary metallurgy processes are of key importance for today's steelmaking in producing the high-purity steels required by demanding customers. Slag control is of fundamental importance in all ladle treatments. Basic condition is to minimize furnace slag carry-over, to form a suitable synthetic slag capable of absorbing deoxidation products, protect the steel from reoxidation and, if required, desulfurize the steel. Premelted calcium aluminate slags play an important role in accelerating synthetic slag formation, promoting generation of adequate slags and enhancing deoxidation, therefore contributing to ensure also a high plant productivity. Careful control of the casting operation is required to maintain the high level of purity reached in the ladle until the solidified steel. Also in the tundish, premelted calcium aluminate are beneficial for absorbing inclusions and prevent reoxidation.
