Abstract

The draining of the tundish at sequence ends and especially at steel grade changes for intermix steel production requires particular attention. Previous solutions often led to inaccurate indication of the amounts of steel remaining in the tundish resulting in big tundish skulls and big intermix-downgrading losses. Therefore a system has been developed which automatically indicates the draining of the tundish and prevents slag flowing into the mould. It has been in operational use at several steel plants since the end of 1995. On the one hand it has been possible to increase the yield by 4 t per tundish sequence end - on the other hand the strand length scrapped and downgraded from grade change has been reduced by 42 %. Additionally, accurate measurement of the residual steel level in the tundish results in improved reliability and accuracy of tundish mixing model predictions.
