Abstract

The pursuit of greater energy efficiency in the mining industry has encouraged the development of solutions aimed at recovering energy from material handling systems. Downhill belt conveyors present significant potential for regenerative operation, in which the gravitational energy of the conveyed material can be converted into electrical energy (HARRISON, 2009; NORDIN; ALI, 2017). However, in many industrial applications, this energy is still dissipated through resistive braking systems. This study aims to evaluate the energy regeneration potential of a laboratory-scale downhill belt conveyor through a combined approach involving theoretical modeling and field measurements. The theoretical analysis was conducted based on operational data related to mass flow rate and electrical power consumption, considering a representative operating period. The collected data were processed and classified according to load ranges, enabling the identification of operating conditions associated with regenerative mode behavior (LUNDE, 2015). In parallel, field measurements were performed to assess the actual system behavior and compare it with the estimated results. The results indicate that the conveyor system presents significant energy recovery potential, especially under higher loading conditions, in which the gravitational component exceeds the system losses. It was also verified that part of this energy is currently dissipated, highlighting opportunities for improvement through the implementation of regenerative systems (ABB, 2020).It is concluded that the integration of theoretical analysis and real operational measurements is essential for accurately evaluating regenerative potential, contributing to energy efficiency initiatives and decarbonization strategies in the mining industry.
