Abstract
This study analyses the mechanical anisotropy in cementitious composites reinforced with 0.5% PET fibres, aiming to evaluate the influence of fibre orientation on flexural performance by comparing random distribution (ALE) with longitudinal alignment (LON). Mortar prisms (40x40x100 mm) were produced in three groups: reference (REF), ALE, and LON, with the fibres in the latter manually aligned in the bottom third to act within the tension zone. Three-point flexural tests, carried out at 7 and 28 days, revealed that the LON group significantly outperformed the ALE and REF groups, presenting an Orientation Efficiency Factor (ɳo) of 5.63 at 7 days and 2.62 at 28 days. The alignment allowed the fibres to act efficiently in the crack-bridging mechanism, favourably altering the failure behaviour. It is concluded that the control of fibre orientation is an engineering strategy superior to random distribution, demonstrating that moulding technically oriented towards the tension zone is fundamental to maximise the potential of PET waste as structural reinforcement in cementitious matrices.
