Abstract
Coke; Coking; Coal; Coke optical texture.
The aimed of the present study was to assess the coke quality produced from blends oriented towards to maximize the use of Colombian coal and low and high volatile coals, seeking to understand the relationship between the properties of parent coals and coke quality. In lights of this, coals ranging in volatile matter and from different origin were selected and characterized. These coals and the blends were carbonized in a pilot coke oven (250 kg). The quality of the produced coke was evaluated by reactivity, mechanical strength (CRI, CSR and DI) and optical texture analyses. The relationships between the parent coals and coke quality were analyzed and discussed throughout the paper, as well as the possibility of using high levels of Colombian coals and high and low rank coals.
