Abstract

This document presents the evolution and advantages of the modern hot blast cupola furnace, particularly the OXICUPOLA system, in melting low-cost hot metal and steel from various types of scrap or virgin raw materials. Traditional small cupolas melted returns and special pig iron using coke, but modern systems like OXICUPOLA offer higher flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and energy independence. The system allows melting of diverse raw materials (e.g., scrap, HBI, pig iron, borings, C-Pellets) and uses oxygen and coke breeze injection through tuyeres to optimize melting conditions and composition control. Hot blast and oxygen enhance the melting rate and quality. The goal of the document is to explain the state of the art of hot blast cupola systems and the potential applications of the OXICUPOLA in steel plants, especially for medium-sized industries aiming for cost and energy efficiency.
