Abstract
On the 8th November 2001, an explosion occurred on the No. 5 Blast Furnace at Port Talbot which put the furnace out of action and led to the sudden loss of hot metal production. A decision was made that the furnace was no longer fit for purpose and the best solution was to rebuild it to an updated design similar to that of the No.4 furnace at the same plant. The CORUS Main Board approved the rebuild project on the 12th January 2002. VAI (the original designers of the No 4 Blast Furnace) were appointed as the main contractor. However, the approach taken to the project was that of “partnering” with VAI working in a joint team with CORUS to build the new Furnace. From signature of the contract, the existing furnace was dismantled and the new furnace was manufactured, delivered, built and commissioned in less than 12 months, with blow in occurring on the 4th January 2003. Innovative techniques in Project management and construction were utilized to make this project a spectacular success
