POLYPROPYLENE PROCESS EQUIPMENT IN THE STEEL INDUSTRY

Abstract

Polypropylene process equipment has steadily gained acceptance for use in the carbon and stainless steel industries for pickling, cleaning, and plating lines. Polypropylene is being used for tanks, covers, electrolytic cells, containments, linings, ductwork, scrubbers and other equipment that has been traditionally made with rubber and brick lined steel, fiberglass, or coated concrete. It is being used for surface treatment equipment in extremely corrosive environments that include most acids, alkalis, and plating solutions with operating temperatures up to 100°C. This paper discusses the engineering and design criterion that permits the manufacture of very large polypropylene fabrications. By using finite element analysis based on plastic creep modulus the stress analysis of polypropylene equipment has developed into a practical science. Trustworthy designs can be produced using the engineering properties of this material with accepted design standards. Innovative designs have been developed through the cooperation of steel industry personnel working with plastic designers. This cooperation has revolutionized process lines by providing cleaner, lighter, less expensive equipment that is easily repaired and requires minimal maintenance. Polypropylene is accepted as the latest technology and the material of choice for carbon and stainless steel pickling lines, electrolytic cleaning lines, and tin plating lines.
