Abstract

The size and volume of pores in refractories are properties that can be correlated with many other properties, such as permeability, slag resistance, creep, and thermal conductivity. Porosity of refractories can vary from very low values in fused cast refractories to values over 90% in fiber insulation. The American Society for Testing Materials lists several methods of determining porosity and also includes maximum and minimum values in some of their specifications and classifications. In this paper, methods of determining porosity and pore sizes will be examined and examples given of their correlations with other properties.
