Abstract
The coal mined in South of Brazil has a low rank, higher contents of inert components, proportioning a high reactivity and no coking properties. Due to these characteristics, the principal use for this coal is the combustion for power generation. However, with the recent utilization of the coal pulverized in the blast furnace tuyeres for combustion, other possibilities appears for the use of the South Brazilians coals. The aim of this study is to obtain technical data to give subsidies for the utilization of the South Brazilians coals in the blast furnaces injection processes, isolate or in mixtures with the imported coals. Initially, have made some physical chemistry and petrographic characterization with the mains coal seams of the Recreio’s mine. Samples with low sulfur and ash content was obtained with the gravimetric beneficiation. Coal’s reactivity was determined by the termogravimetric analysis. The principal results obtained in this project stage show that the South Brazilians coals have a good chance for utilization in PCI.
