Abstract

Até o ano de 2008, a indústria da mineração vinha passando por um período de forte crescimento, reflexo da alta demanda das commodities e conseqüente alta dos preços das mesmas. Nesse contexto, os investimentos no setor aumentavam a cada ano. No entanto, no ano de 2008, a crise no setor imobiliário americano deflagrou um início de um período de recessão que pode afetar esse crescimento. O objetivo deste trabalho é verificar a relação entre a alta nos preços e o seu reflexo nos investimentos, através de gráficos e posteriores análises. Foram estudados aspectos como a diferença temporal entre as mudanças nos preços e nos investimentos e o estágio de execução dos projetos. Após a análise, pode ser verificado que a alta nos preços, principalmente a partir de 2004, refletiu-se em aumento nos investimentos em 2006 e 2007, mais intensamente nos projetos em estudos de viabilidade e em reativação ou expansão de minas. Com a queda nos preços ao longo do ano de 2008, esperamos que os novos dados a partir desta data reflitam uma nova conjuntura de investimentos.

 

Until the year of 2008, mining industry was going through a strong growth period, reflecting the commodities’ high demand and consequently their high prices. In this context, investments in mining sector were bigger each year. However, at the year of 2008, the crisis at American housing sector deflagrated a beginning of a recession period that may affect this growth. The objective of this paper is to verify the relationship between high prices and investment, in aspects such as temporal difference between changes on prices and investment and stage of execution of projects. After the analysis, could be verified the high on prices, mainly from 2004, reflected in high of investment at 2006 and 2007, mostly in feasibility studies and reactivation or expansion projects. With prices fall throughout the year of 2008, we have a new conjuncture of investment.
