Abstract

Hoogovens Ijmuiden steelworks is a quality supplier for tin-coated packaging steel. For the consistent production of this high quality product, steel strip with tight control of chemical composition and low concentration of non-metallic inclusions is required. Control of chemical composition is possible in modern steel plants, using well-balanced charge models, sublance technology with dynamic control models and secondary metallurgy installations. The precise chemical control, however, does not ensure a steel strip that meets packaging steel (read: can makers) requirements. This means that a steel maker can not suffice with just adding another equipment to the process route. The importance of non-metallic inclusions for this thin strip is very large. The paper described operational methods applied at Hoogovens Ijmuiden in the Netherlands to control the inclusions. Results of tests with the Electro Magnetic Break (EMBr) are given.
