Abstract

Some industries in Rio Grande do Sul which are involved in galvanic processes are concerned with the continuing generation of galvanic sludge, for its content of heavy metals and its storage. Moreover, many of these factories could optimise their production processes with respect to efficiency and effluent generation. Besides that, the Brazilian legislation tends to enforce the requirements related to the generation and storage of hazardous residues, exercising pressure on the galvanic industry for the practice of clean technologies in their galvanic lines. PROGAL is a joint project proposal with partners from universities and research institutes with the aim to help the industry with these problems. In order to achieve the legal requirements mentioned above, PROGAL intends to optimise the galvanic processes of three companies of Rio Grande do Sul, in cooperation with research institutions of this region and the Fraunhofer – IPA Institute. PROGAL is one of the CETA-RS - Centre of Excellence in Advanced Technologies of Rio Grande do Sul - pilot projects, which intends to promote the technological cooperation between the Fraunhofer Society, Germany, and the region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, transferring know-how and of technology as well as fostering the co-operation integrating research institutions and industry.
