Abstract

China has expanded its ironmaking industry very quickly in last decade. The hot metal production was 629.69 Mt in 2011. Pellet production has risen over 15 times. Progress of sinter production is characterized as enlargement of sinter machines, deep bed sintering, heat recovery and desulphurization. Coke output reached up to 428 Mt in 2011. Coke quality is improved by means of construction of new coking batteries, application of coke dry quenching, coal moisture control and stamp charged technologies. Blast furnace performance has been improved with high hot blast temperature, dry cleaning of blast furnace top gas, high pulverized coal rate injection, adoption of modern facilities, and pollution control etc. New ironmaking processes, like Corex and rotary hearth furnace process, are under development. The major challenges for Chinese ironmaking industry facing currently are insufficiency of domestic iron ore supply, over-capacity of hot metal production, coexistence of modern and backward technologies, and heavy impact on environment. The tendency of the Chinese ironmaking industry in next decade is to optimize the process of blast furnace ironmaking, to enhance energy efficiency, and to control various emissions effectively.
