Abstract

The phenomenon of martensitic transformation in metastable austenitic steels exhibiting the TRIP effect has been extensively studied due to the influence of factors such as stress, strain, temperature, and chemical composition. In this context, martensitic transformation was investigated in 304L stainless steel under hot-rolled (HR) and cold-rolled/annealed (CR/A) conditions. The phase transformation was mechanically induced through tensile tests performed at room and cryogenic temperatures. The results showed that martensitic transformation was favored in the cold-rolled/annealed condition, associated with its lower stacking fault energy, as well as under cryogenic temperature conditions. For the induction of athermal martensitic transformation, martensite formation was observed after 4 h of immersion in liquid nitrogen, starting from a fully austenitic material. This work also presents the microstructural and mechanical properties of 304L stainless steel in the HR and CR/A conditions.
