Abstract

Tendo como uma de suas prioridades a promoção do desenvolvimento sustentável, a Vega do Sul-Arcelor Brasil não hesitou em investir numa parceria com os maricul- tores de São Francisco do Sul para implementação do projeto “Protegendo os Cos- tões”. A iniciativa consiste em fornecer suporte para um planejamento geral do proje- to e possibilitar as condições financeiras, com patrocínio de materiais, aos pescado- res artesanais do município para que cultivem o mexilhão Perna perna por intermé- dio de coletores artificiais. Os mariscos de Santa Catarina já são referência em todo o país e o projeto vem contribuir para essa visibilidade e para o aumento da qualida- de do produto que ganha cada vez mais espaço nos grandes centros consumidores. Além do valor comercial que agrega para São Francisco do Sul e de combater a ex- tinção da espécie e todo o comprometimento da biodiversidade costeira da região, o projeto tem reconhecido fator de desenvolvimento social, pois beneficia várias famí- lias de comunidades tradicionalmente carentes com a geração de emprego, renda e, conseqüentemente, com a melhoria da qualidade de vida. Com o sucesso desta parceria inédita entre a Vega do Sul-Arcelor Brasil e os maricultores da região, estas famílias não precisam mais sair de suas comunidades litorâneas para buscar outro meio de subsistência. Com o projeto, não só os costões são preservados, mas tam- bém as tradições e o modo de vida dessas comunidades, com a permanência do pescador em sua área de atuação.

 

Vega do Sul-Arcelor Brasil considers sponsoring sustainable development programs one of its high priorities, and therefore did not hesitate tom invest in a partnership with the sea–farmers of São Francisco do Sul in the project known as “Protegendo os Costões”(Protecting the Headlands). This initiative consists in supplying support to the general planning of the project and enabling it financially, by assisting the native fishermen in obtaining materials so that they can raise Perna perna mussels in artifi- cial collection devices. The mussels of Santa Catarina are well known throughout Brazil and this project will contribute to this visibility and to the quality improvement of the product which has a growing demand throughout the larger Brazilian cities. Be- sides offering additional income to the São Francisco do Sul area and combating the extinction of the species, and threats to the area’s biodiversity, the project carries an obvious content of social development, since it benefits various families in communi- ties that are essentially impoverished, by generating jobs, income and thereby an improved standard of living. With the success of the unique partnership between Vega do Sul-Arcelor Brasil and the sea-farmers, these families no longer need leave their coastal communities to seek means of survival. The project not only protects the headlands, but also traditions and an old way of life by maintaining the fishermen within their traditional areas. .
