Abstract

In the present work, magnetite-ore/coal composite briquettes, reduced under a N₂ atmosphere at 1200°C from 5 to 45 minutes, were prepared for cross-section observation in a state-of-the-art computerized optical microscope with digital image acquisition and analysis, for a preliminary quantification of the metallic iron phase. A specialized automation, acquisition and analysis procedure was developed under the software KS400. The samples were scanned with automatic focus correction using a motorized x-y-z specimen stage. Dozens of fields per sample were acquired with a high resolution CCD camera and subsequently processed and analyzed. Automatic segmentation discriminated the metallic iron phase and its area fraction for each image was obtained. The results provided additional data to assist the existing kinetic models of self-reducing agglomerates.
