Abstract
Characteristics and attributes of a coal-based radiant reduction process are discussed. Green agglomerates are formed with Carajas iron ore fines, pulverized non-metallurgical coal and agglomeration additives. The green agglomerates are continuously reduced in a radiantly heated environment. The carbon in the coal reacts rapidly with the oxygen in the iron ore to create a variety of metallized products. These products are suitable for a number of post processing options including the formation of a high carbon hot briquetted iron product, for use in blast furnace burdens. The presentation will illustrate the finding of various process development efforts as well as practical experience with commercial operations and future projections for the use of pre-reduction iron products.
