Abstract
Due the increased internal coke demand in SIDERAR and coupled to worldwide shortage in the coke supply market and coke transportation capacity a feasibility study made by SIDERAR resulted in the decision of the recommissioning of the existing, but cooled down battery no. 2. The feasibility study included following items: evaluation of the refractory structure of the cold battery including material characterization, extend of damage and scope of necessary repairs before and after heating – up; requirements of machinery rehabilitation; timely availability of coke compared to a new battery. This paper informs about the preparation of the recommissioning of the battery with a special emphasis of the heating technology and control, the measures taken before, during and after heating – up and the first operational results.
