Abstract
Recovery of metal values from various industrial wastes is a major step towards conservation and judicious utilisation of our mineral resources which are non-replenishable natural ones. The recovery of metal values can be achieved by different physical and chemical processes depending on the nature and composition of the wastes. In certain cases, the chloride routes have been found to be highly suitable from technology as well as economic points of view and also for abating pollution to a great extent. In this paper, the application of various chlorinating agents like gaseous chlorine, hydrochloric acid, alkali and alkaline chlorides, carbon tetrachloride etc. in recovering the metal values from some typical industrial wastes, has been discussed with a mention of the basic principles involved. Processing of some of the industrial wastes highlighted in this paper includes electric arc furnace dust, zirconium scrap, tin slag, and vanadium and nickel bearing petroleum cokes. The research and developmental work carried out by the authors and their colleagues using different chlorinating agents for recovering the metal values from some typical industrial wastes and off-grade ores have been described and discussed. Some recent studies on the application of low temperature chlorinating agents for recovery of metals, including the basic studies made by the authors on carbon tetrachloride chlorination, have been incorporated. Certain pollution abating properties of some chloride routes to treat the wastes, have also been highlighted.
