Abstract

The main objective of this work is to present a brief history and the current and future scenarios of the operational condition of Blast Furnace 01 at Gerdau Ouro Branco, as well as to detail the intervention carried out in the hearth to restore the cooling system in this region. Blast Furnace 01 is the main asset of Gerdau Ouro Branco, having started its operation in 1986 with a daily production capacity of 7,500 tons of hot metal. Since the beginning of its operation, five major interventions have been carried out on Blast Furnace 01, related to improvements aimed at increasing production, emergency repairs, and end-of-campaign actions. The blast furnace is basically divided into five main parts: 1 the top, which is the upper part of the furnace through which the raw materials are charged; 2 the stack, which is the region just below the top where the initial heating of the burden occurs and the reduction reactions of iron ore begin; 3 the belly, an intermediate and wider part of the furnace, where reduction intensifies and the melting of materials begins; 4 the bosh, an inclined region below the belly, where the highest temperatures occur (up to approximately 2000 °C) near the tuyeres, where the coke burns with the injected hot air; and 5 the hearth, which is the lowest part where molten iron and slag accumulate, with the function of storing these liquids before tapping. The cooling of the hearth bottom is responsible for maintaining a stable temperature at the base, preserving the carbon blocks, forming an internal protective layer, controlling temperature, increasing the furnace's lifetime, and ensuring operational safety. The cooling system of the BF1 hearth presents a condition of severe corrosion and obstruction in its cooling lines. This work describes the methodology used for the refurbishment and recovery of the cooling lines, as well as the continuous monitoring applied to ensure control and extend the operational lifetime of the blast furnace. It can be concluded that the intervention methodology was satisfactory and caused few negative impacts on the operational process. The recovery of the hearth cooling system will significantly contribute to extending the asset’s service life and ensuring the safety of the entire production process, guaranteeing equipment preservation and personnel safety.
