Abstract

Vibration in the rol1 stack of high speed tandem mills and temper mills is a wide spread problem throghout the worid. This vibration, also known as chatter or rumble, severely affects the quality of the finished product and the productivity of the mill operation. A careful analysis of the cause of this vibration reveals that many factors contribute to this problern, however, one factor cleariy plays an important role - the inherent gap between the roll chocks and rnill housings. Through the use of na expandable liner during the rolling cycle, this clearance is eliminated and substantial reduction in chatter and vibration is achieved. Through proper operation and use, a dramatic increase (up to 15%) in rolling speeds is accomplished and chatter-free product is successfully rolled at increased mill speeds. This paper will discuss the developments, application, installation and maintenance of HydraLinersTM.
