Abstract
Cold rolling; Surface defect; Aluminum flat rolling.
The Can End Stock (CES) is a product with high added value and surface quality is an extremely important item for Can Makers, because this product is used in the manufacturing of aluminum lids for beverage cans. During the cold rolling the peaks in the topography of the work rolls break-off aluminum from the surface the aluminum strip, forming aluminum fines. Smut consists of solid, inorganic wear debris on the surface of the aluminum strip. This debris consists of loose particles of aluminum fines and aluminum oxides, as well as associated organic residuals (that give the typical black appearance) - Smut was characterized as surface defect caused by a dark residue in the direction of rolling. This surface defect is responsible for generating a high rate of internal rejection and also a high rate customer return and is only detected at the end of the process when the material is already painted. The Can End Stock is our product with higher technical complexity and long lead time, so any rejection impacted not only the domestic cost of production, but also in our service delivery to our customers. The objective is to show the mechanism of generation of Smut, the control plan implemented to reduce the rejection Can End Stock by Smut and gains obtained after the execution of the project based on the Six Sigma methodology. Discussions of the proposed solutions are highlighted in this presentation.
