Abstract
The secondary steelmaking has recently been made a rapid progress in the steelmaking industry in response to a call for quality improvement and cost-down. Various ladle refining processes have been developed to produce steels of higher quality with higher efficiency. The development of ladle refining processes has been carried out based on the functional changes of refractory materials used for ladles. Since the ladle refining process is conducted under high temperature, high vacuum, and strong agitation conditions, the refractory materials used for ladles are required to satisfy the severe conditions. In this paper, the recent development and problems of refractory materials used for ladles are described, and the fundamental concepts of refractory design for ladle refining processes are also discussed.
