Abstract

Niobium in Baotou ore is very difficult to be concentrated separated from iron. A lot of research works have been done to get niobite concentration. It is technically possible to get niobite with a Nb content of about 20%. But the commercialization is very difficult due to the high cost of concentration process. There is a semi-finished product of concentration with a Fe content of about 55% and a Nb content of about 1.8%. The price of this product is much cheaper. Research work introduced in this paper is done on the niobium abstraction from this product. Pellets of this concentration were reduced in a simulating rotary kiln for direct reduction. The temperature in rotary kiln was so designed, that iron could be well reduced but niobium could remain its oxidized state. Next step of the process was smelting separation of the reduced pellets using an electric arc furnace. Two products were got from smelting separation. One of them was hot metal with the most iron. The other was the slag with the most niobium. The last step was Nb-Fe alloy production from the slag using an electric arc furnace.
