Abstract
This work corresponds to Part I of a series of three studies dedicated to the evaluation of the microabrasive wear resistance of tool steels treated with combined surface architectures. In this stage, VH13 steel was evaluated under six conditions: untreated, nitrided only, coated only with Plenus Duty, nitrided + Plenus Duty, nitrided + PVD-AlCrN, and nitrided + PVD-AlCrN + Plenus Duty. Microabrasion tests were carried out using the free-ball rotating method, with an AISI 52100 steel ball, Al₂O₃ abrasive slurry, normal loads of 0.1 N, 0.4 N, and 0.5 N, and rolling distances of 500 m, 1000 m, and 1500 m. The results showed an increase in wear volume with increasing normal load and rolling distance, with the untreated steel being the most susceptible condition. The isolated Plenus Duty treatment partially reduced wear, whereas nitriding promoted a more consistent effect. The nitrided + Plenus Duty condition exhibited superior performance compared with the isolated treatments, evidencing a complementary effect between mechanical support and modification of the tribological interface. The lowest wear coefficients were obtained for the PVD-AlCrN-containing architectures, particularly for the nitrided + PVD-AlCrN + Plenus Duty condition, whose wear coefficient remained more than one order of magnitude lower than those of the PVD-free conditions.
