Abstract

This work corresponds to Part II of a series dedicated to the preliminary evaluation of the microabrasive wear resistance of tool steels treated with combined surface architectures. In this stage, VC131 steel was evaluated under six conditions: untreated, nitrided, coated with Plenus Duty, nitrided + Plenus Duty, nitrided + PVD-AlCrN, and nitrided + PVD-AlCrN + Plenus Duty. Microabrasion tests were performed using the free-ball rotating method, with an AISI 52100 steel ball, alumina abrasive slurry, normal loads of 0.1 N, 0.4 N, and 0.5 N, and sliding distances of 500 m, 1000 m, and 1500 m. The results indicated that VC131 exhibits high intrinsic abrasive wear resistance, associated with its higher hardness and the presence of primary carbides, which made the differences among the untreated, Plenus Duty-coated, nitrided, and nitrided + Plenus Duty conditions less pronounced when compared with H13 steel. Nevertheless, the treated surfaces reduced the severity of the wear craters and abrasive grooving. The lowest wear rates were obtained for the architectures containing PVD-AlCrN, with or without Plenus Duty, indicating the higher efficiency of the nitrided + PVD-AlCrN route and the complementary role of Plenus Duty in stabilizing the tribological interface.
