Abstract
This work corresponds to Part III of a series dedicated to the evaluation of the microabrasive wear resistance of tool steels treated with combined architectures of nitriding, PVD-AlCrN, and Plenus Duty/ZrO₂. In this stage, VF800 steel was evaluated under six conditions: untreated, nitrided only, coated only with Plenus Duty, nitrided + Plenus Duty, nitrided + PVD-AlCrN, and nitrided + PVD-AlCrN + Plenus Duty. Free-ball rotating microabrasion tests were performed using an alumina abrasive slurry, normal loads of 0.1 N, 0.4 N, and 0.5 N, and sliding distances of 500 m, 1000 m, and 1500 m. The results indicated a progressive increase in wear volume with increasing load and sliding distance. However, unlike VH13 steel, VF800 showed lower variation among the conditions without PVD, evidencing higher intrinsic microabrasive wear resistance, with behavior similar to that observed for VC131 steel. Nitriding and Plenus Duty promoted moderate improvements, whereas the lowest wear rates were obtained for the architectures containing PVD-AlCrN. The addition of Plenus Duty to the duplex system maintained the tribological performance, contributing to the stability of the interface.
