Abstract
During the primary refining process in the converter, heat losses occur in the liquid steel through the heat flow from the refractory lining towards the metal shell. Originally, the refractory lining of the AM PECÉM converter did not have insulating lining. Therefore, this work consisted of developing the use of thermal insulation in the converter to reduce heat losses in the refractory lining, reducing the heat flow towards the shell and promoting greater thermal soaking of the lining, i.e., higher temperatures on the hot face of the working lining. The results observed during the campaign generated increased productivity, reduced downtime for reheating, stability of refractory lining performance, and preservation of the metal shell. Furthermore, a comparative analysis of the pouring temperature between the converter with and without thermal insulation showed an average thermal gain of 12°C, indicating greater thermal conservation of the liquid steel. In terms of sustainability, lower heat loss provides additional thermal reserves, potentially convertible into an increased rate of metallic scrap, promoting lower CO2 emissions for the steel production process and contributing to positive results for the company from both an economic and environmental standpoint.
