Abstract
In smelting reduction studies and tests, different factors are important to achieve high productivity and product quality, e.g. types of slag melting systems, energy consumption, nature of raw materials, reductant, slag foaming, reaction kinetics, etc. In this paper, two important aspects of SR process were reviewed: slag foaming and kinetics of FeO reduction in molten slag. The term smelting reduction (SR) refers to a process where reduction of iron ore is carried out at high temperature to obtain liquid iron using non-coking coal and oxygen, with substantial part of reduction taking place in liquid oxide phase, and this results in generation of large amount of gases in the reactor. These gases are responsible for excessive slag foaming. To achieve higher production rate, violent foaming is inevitable. Aside from this, foams were also generated by injecting an external gas in a synthetic molten slag. Kinetics studies have attempted to study separately, reduction by solid carbon, solute carbon (i.e carbon dissolved in iron) and carbon monoxide. Therefore, studies on kinetics of FeO reduction in molten slag and their foaming are very important to developed a highly efficient smelting reduction process.
