Abstract

The MonolithTMg rinder - a new generation of roll grinding machine, represents a quantum leap in technology that is now ready for introduction to the international public. The design of the Monolith™ grinder isolates the machine from vibrations without a special costly foundation and labor-intensive installation. The capability and efficiency of this revolutionary machine design has already been proven under actual production conditions. Herkules successfully dernonstrated rough grinding of hot mill work rolls, as well as, polish grinding of alurninurn foil mill rolls and skin pass mill rolls. The patented bed design of the Monolith™ rinder consists of three sections. On top is a high alloy casting machined to accornrnodate standard machine grinding components, the bottorn of the bed is a heavy steel plate. The mid section of the bed consists of polymer quartz with a high degree of vibration damping to form na extrernely rigid and stable composite bed, which is isolated from external vibrations by specially designed isolation pads. This design enables the machine to be placed on a standard shop floor without the need for grouting, special anchoring components, or special alignmnent work. Both static and dynamic calculations were used as the basis for the new design. The bed was modeled using finite element analysis, followed by testing of the completed structure to verify the results. The complete machine is equipped with the highest degree of automation including an online two-point measuring unit, fully automatic control system (CNC), and roll crack detection unit.
