Abstract

The EDT process has been developed to enable steel manufacturers to supply cold rolled strip with higher standards of surface finish. Steel sheet for a wide variety of applications including autobody and coated sheet is being produced using EDT textured rolls, the best quality steel being subjected to EDT in both tandem and temper mills. As quality improves, greater attention is paid to the standards of assessing the surface finish and the instruments used. This paper describes the use of EDT rolls for autobody applications in cold rolling mills. A comparison is made between two alternative 2 dimensional measurement systems used to control roll surface quality. 3-dimensional surface measurements are also presented to highlight improvernents that can be achieved in cold mills where EDT rolls are used in the last stand of the tandem mill as well as in the temper mill
