Rotary Continuous Casting – A New Process in Continuous Casting

Abstract

A new process for continuous casting, the Rotary Continuous Casting Machine, is being introduced. After having proved successful for the casting of copper and aluminium the process has undergone further development in order to be made usable for steel, and has been constructed so far in 2 production units of up to 220.000 t/y each. A third rotary caster is under construction. Billets of a cross-section area of approx. 18,500 mm² can be cast with a rotating mould at a speed of 4 to 6 m/min. Due to the elimination of reheating costs as well as the increase in yield in the rolling mill the production costs per ton of finished rolled product can be reduced considerably when a rotary continuous casting wheel is used. The RCCM is designed for use in steel plants with an annual production of between 110.000 t/y and 300.000 t/y and the quality of cast steel is suitable for structural steel.
