Abstract
The global steel industry faces the challenge of reducing CO₂ emissions—responsible for 7–9% of worldwide totals—while remaining competitive during the ongoing energy transition. This study provides an integrated and comprehensive comparison of the main iron reduction routes, including smelting reduction (COREX, FINEX, HIsarna, Tecnored), direct reduction (MIDREX, HYL/Energiron, CIRCORED), and emerging hydrogen-based pathways. The analysis combines quantitative modeling, Life Cycle Assessment (ISO 14040/44), and industrial benchmarking to evaluate energy use, emissions, costs, and technological maturity, while identifying critical gaps such as the absence of standardized methodologies, limited hydrogen infrastructure, and the lack of green steel certification. Results indicate that Tecnored and DRI-H₂ offer the highest decarbonization potential, while Brazil—with its renewable electricity matrix, abundant biomass, and high-grade iron ore—has structural advantages to potentially assume a leading role in low-carbon ironmaking routes. This study contributes to the debate on industrial competitiveness and technological strategies for deep emission reductions.
