Abstract

smartcrown is a new profile and flatness actuator system developed by VAI and creates a strip profile superior to that of existing profile and flatness systems. One of the main advantages of this technology is that quarter buckles can be suppressed to the greatest extent possible, most importantly at the beginning of rolling following a rol1 change. The Smartcrown roll contour is based on a tilted sinus curve along which the roll radius is adjusted across the roll-barrel length. The system can be installed in all hot- and cold-rolling mills for steel and aluminum. The technology makes use of innovative equipment such as the L-type bending and shifting block with reduced wear, an online roll stack deflection model, and a mill stand design with reduced nip. Other essential features are the optimized shifting strategy and the dynamic work-roll cooling. This paper describes the technological design and function of the equipment and discusses potential improvements in the quality of the rolled strip.
