Abstract
The iron ore beneficiation plant of Carajás will be producing about 70Mtpy of natural pellet and fines in 2004. In order to process special iron ore, which can not be produced at the same time of iron ore, such as high silica grade, CVRD has bought three crushing and screening mobile plants, named Aztecas Plants. This paper is about how the operation of those plants is. The crushing and screening processes, the equipments applied, physical and chemical characteristics of the material as well as informations about loading, labors, contractors and safety and quality methods is shown. In spite of the scale of the production of the mobile plants is much less than the main plant, it is not easier to produce. Water is not added in the screening and the material is quite abrasive. Although the amount of processing (ROM – Run of Mine) of each plant depends on the material, it may be about 432,000 tpy. The main beneficiation plant used to process all the material, including specials as high silica, alumina and low phosphorus grade. In 1998 the first mobile plant started up, adding its production to the Carajás production. Nowadays CVRD acquired three Aztecas Plants and is supposed to install the forth and fifth plant up to the end of this year.
