Abstract
Industrial energy costs will continue to represent an substantial part of total cost in integrated steel plants. Consequently prompt attention should be given to modernize its electric power plants. This lecture examines ways of efficiency increasing and energy saving measures by integration of a 68 MW combined cycle power plant and replacing of old equipment in the existing power plant. VAI has realized this project by VOEST-ALPINE STAHL Linz GmbH in February 1996. The entire plant was completed within 21 months. The gas turbine, whose exhaust is conveyed to a HRSG (steam generator) with supplementary firing of metallurgical gases (blast furnace gas, coke oven gas) and natural gas, is combined with that of a condensing turbine unit with extraction for process steam. The combination makes it possible to achieve the energy efficiency nearly 80% and electrical power from the grid is normally not yet required. The plant is also designed for switch over from gasturbine operating mode to forced draft fan operating mode.
