Abstract
This paper tries to understand the behavior of self-reducing pellets to produce iron nuggets. The following effects were experimentally tested and analyzed: the reducing agent; content of volatile matters; composition of the slag; and the thermal cycles of the reducing process of the self-reducing pellets. The results showed that: at high temperatures, above 1373K, the volatile matters have negligible influence on reduction but can have negative effect when the content in the reducing agent is high (~30%); the reduction temperature should not be higher than ~1573K to avoid volcano’s effect; and the coalescence of iron droplets in the pellets is dependent of the composition of slag and it is favored with low liquidus temperature.
