Abstract

Oil film bearings are used as the back-up roll neck bearings on thousands of ferrous and nonferrous flat products mill stands throughout the world. The proper lubrication of oil film roll neck bearings is important if they are to achieve the long service life of which the design is inherently capable. Because of the difficult environrnent in which these bearings operate, the ability of the lubricant to separate water is one of the essential qualities of a roll neck bearing lubricant. In recent years, there have been developments in lubricant technology that allow water to separate faster, and at lower temperatures, than in the past. This paper will start with a brief review of oil film bearings, followed by a discussion of the functional differences between standard bearing lubricants and so-called Super Demulsibility (SD) lubricants. The applicability of these lubricants to existing lubrication systems and the implications of SD lubricants on future systems will also be discussed.
