Abstract
Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) applied to AISI 316L stainless steel may generate high residual stresses due to the successive thermal cycles inherent to the process. This study evaluated the effect of heat treatment on the microstructure, crystalline phases, and residual stresses of WAAM-produced components. The samples were heat treated at 1000 °C for 2 h and 4 h, followed by air cooling. Microstructural characterization was performed by optical microscopy, while phase identification and residual stress analysis were conducted by X-ray diffraction using the sin²ψ method. The results indicated predominance of the austenitic phase under both conditions, along with secondary reflections compatible with possible secondary phases in the 2 h condition. Increasing the heat treatment time promoted slight microstructural homogenization and a tendency toward reduction in the estimated compressive residual stress values. However, the strong crystallographic texture resulted in high experimental dispersion, preventing statistical confirmation of significant differences between the evaluated conditions.
