Abstract

Electric arc furnace steel plants' energy costs have increased significantly in recent years. At the same time excess steelmaking capacity has prevented earnings from keeping pace with these rising costs, and producers have suffered heavy losses as a result. Badische Stahlwerke AG (BSW) was no exception, especially from 1977–1979. Efforts were made during this period to identify new technologies which would increase productivity and cut costs as quickly as possible. A project designed to effect substantial energy savings was launched which resulted in a cost reduction of over DM 70 per ton. Badische Stahlwerke is situated in Kehl close to the French border with port facilities on the river Rhine. The plant, constructed in 1968, operates with scrap supplied mainly by barge and integrates melting, casting, rolling and wire processing in a continuous production flow.
