Abstract
More than 100 years ago, ASEA designed the first DC arc furnace. However, it was not until the last five years that the DC arc furnace made its definitive breakthrough. It is now accepted worldwide. ABB started development of the furnace in 1972 and now has a market-leading position, with DC furnaces delivered or on order. One of the most important features is the conductive bottom electrode, which in the ABB DC arc furnace consists of a magnesite-graphite brick lining. The furnace's most important advantages are presented. New developments aimed at further improving the furnace are reported on. Finally, operating results from a modern 80-tonne, 60 MVA DC arc furnace are described.
