Abstract
A series of studies were performed at the BHPBilliton Newcastle Technology Centre, Australia, on the effect of replacing United States coals with BHPBilliton Mitsubishi Alliance Australian coals on oven wall pressure and coke quality. Results showed that when United States coals were replaced by Australian coals in blends: the measured oven wall pressure of the blend decreased significantly; the cold coke strength was not adversely affected, and in some cases improved slightly; the Coke Strength after Reaction index was not adversely affected and in most cases improved; the coke sulfur content was lower; the coke phosphorus and ash contents were higher for some blends and similar for others, depending on the United States and Australian coals used; the ash chemistry of the blend improved, despite higher ash content for some blends. Some practical implications of replacing United States coals with Australian coals in battery blends include: reduced damage to battery walls and less probability of “stickers” leading to extended asset life; the possibility of increasing the battery blend rank and reducing blend volatile matter content to improve coke yield at similar battery working rate without increasing the risk of oven damage; increased Coke Strength after Reaction index may lead to improved blast furnace operations in terms of decreased fuel rate and increased productivity.
